Tver State University
In December 1, 1870 a school teacher P. Maksimovich opened a private educational institution, training teachers for primary schools. In 1917 it became Tver Teachers Institute, and later — Kalinin Pedagogical Institute. In September 1, 1971 it was reorganized into Kalinin State University and since 1991 has been known as Tver State University.
It is the largest university in the Upper-Volga Region and holds the status of one of the popular universities of the central Russian region.
The University is currently a state-funded institution with about 6500 full-time, 190 postgraduate students and about 1800 correspondent ones.
There are 9 teaching blocks to obtain knowledge and 8 halls of residence for comfortable living at the students' disposal.
Responding actively to modern-day challenges, Tver SU is developing dynamically. During the last five years, TSU has been one of the leading traditional universities in the region.
TSU has over 20 research schools in 15 branches of knowledge, it runs over 60 postgraduate programs. There are 9 dissertation councils, 19 scientific centers, about 20 scientific research laboratories, Botanical Garden (which is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the north-west of Russia), Scientific Library serves 11 thousand readers and lends more than 1 million books, magazines, electronic documents and other issues.

Russian Language for Foreigners and Preparatory Course
Foundation Program
Our Department offers a range of programmes to study:
1. Preparatory course (One-year Russian course)
This is the best programme for beginners who would like to learn the Russian language from the basics (A1-B1). The course usually lasts 10 months starting in September and ending in June. The curriculum includes such disciplines as "Russian Grammar", "Spoken Language", "Russia Today" (concentrates on politics), "Russian Literature" and some others. Overall Foreign entrants can choose from about 30 different subjects. The number of academic hours allocated to studying is 1076.
Tuition fee: 138 000 RUB – about 2000 USD
2. One-semester programme (exchange programme)
The international students of partner Universities can apply for an exchange programme. The number of academic hours depends on the subjects the students would study, but it must amount approximately 320 hours (from 16 to 20 hours a week). All students with A2-B2 language levels are welcome.
The Department of Russian Language for Foreigners is a year-round training facility. Flexible enrollment dates and a variety of elective courses are designed to meet the needs of students. In recent years students have come from more than 20 countries and have ranged in age from 17 to 70.

Students obtain knowledge in 13 faculties, 2 institutes, 68 sub-departments. In 2022 there will be full time students enrolled in 46 Bachelor and 6 Specialist fields of study, 46 Master degree and 31 Postgraduate program.
Faculty of Biology
The Faculty of Biology is one of the youngest faculties in the University. For over 50 years, the study of Biology was part of different faculties: Geography, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Chemical Biology, and in the last ten years the Faculty of Geography and Chemical Biology. In May 2002, the university added a new department to the Faculty of Biology.
The Faculty of Biology has highly qualified academic teaching staff and well known scientific schools. Furthermore, the department conducts fundamental training on traditional and latest specializations of modern biology.
Students can gain practical experience at the research facility Feriazkino, the Botanical garden, and in our three teaching and research laboratories: zoology, human biomedical problems and human respiratory physiology. Long distance field trips to other regions of Russia, European countries and Scandinavia have become an integral part of Faculty life. The Faculty maintains close ties with many institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and upholds international cooperation.

Faculty of History
The History Faculty is the center of historical studies in the region. The faculty provides a classical university education through innovative methods and technologies.
A professional historian is a specialist that is in demand at all times. After all, only with a profound knowledge of the past can one confidently look to the future and build one's present with confidence.
History graduates are highly sought after in various fields: secondary and higher education institutions, science and culture institutions, government agencies, business, journalism, politics, advertising and travel agencies etc. And, of course, a broad horizon is open to them in the world of science and research.
As part of the practical training, students of the Faculty of History participate in archeological expeditions and familiarization trips to historical and cultural centers in Russia and in Europe. These include: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladimir, Suzdal, Novgorod, Rostov Veliky, Sergiyev Posad, Vienna, Prague, Dresden, Warsaw, Helsinki, Stockholm and Turku.
The main components of The International Bologna System of Education Process are actively implemented within the Faculty. The top students of the Faculty of History receive an exchange education - one semester at a university in Veliko Tarnovo or in Helsinki, Finland, on budgetary basis. On a fee-paying study program, it is possible to receive an exchange education at a university in the USA, France or Germany. Graduates receive a diploma supplement of an international standard on completion (including English language).

Faculty of Mathematics
The Faculty of Mathematics is one of the oldest at Tver State University. Training of budding mathematicians has been carried out here since 1917. The university is the only place in Tver's region where one can receive a fundamental education in mathematics. The demand for mathematic specialists is always growing, both within Russia and the wider world.
Students in this faculty receive thorough mathematical and computer training, which gives them the opportunity to apply their knowledge in various spheres of activity after graduating from the University: at academic and research institutes, in design and scientific organizations and industrial research enterprises, institutions of higher, secondary and tertiary education centers, at centers for computing and analysis, in managerial and statistical agencies, financial/lending institutions, banks, insurance companies, and at other commercial establishments.
The Mathematics Faculty has 17 professors and 32 associate professors. The names of many of our scholars are well known, not only in Russia, but also abroad. The Faculty works closely with leading Russian and foreign research institutes and universities: The Steklov Institute of Mathematics, Russian Academy of Sciences, The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna with Moscow State University, The University of Osnabruk and others.

Institute of Pedagogical Education and Social Technology
A faculty for training elementary school teachers possessing a higher education was established in the late 1950s at the Kalinin State Pedagogical Institute. In 1971, the Institute was transformed into a university, and the Faculty was closed due to the fact the structure of a classical university could not incorporate pedagogical faculties.
The lack of highly qualified specialists in primary schools soon became noticeable, and the University opened the department of "Pedagogy and Methodology of Primary Education". In 1984, the first students embarked on their studies. In 1986, the Faculty of Pedagogy gained its official status.

Faculty of Geography and Geoecology
The training of geography teachers in the Tver region has been conducted since 1917.
The Faculty of Geography, as a part of the Kalinin Pedagogical Institute, was established in 1936. After numerous reorganizations and mergers with the Chemistry and Biology departments, the Faculty of Geography and Geoecology was formed in 2002.
There are 6 doctors of sciences, 18 candidates of sciences, 6 senior instructors and 1 postgraduate student active in the Faculty.
Tver Region's Division of Russian Geographical Society, whose chairman is Professor A.V. Belotserkovsky, Doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, plays an important role in promulgating geographical knowledge and formation of geographical culture. Seminars dedicated to significant dates in the development of geography are carried out on a regular basis, where scientific reports are heard.

Faculty of Foreign Languages and International Communication
The Faculty of Foreign Languages and International Communication (previously The Faculty of Foreign Languages, and before 2002 The Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology) is rightfully considered one of the university's oldest faculties. Thanks to its rich academic, scientific and pedagogical traditions, to the present day it is one of the most prestigious faculties of TSU.
The Faculty of Foreign Languages and International Communication prepares qualified specialists in the field of linguistics and cross-cultural communication, who possess a high level of expertise and social empathy, strong patriotic feelings and intercultural tolerance. Apart from mastering, at a highly professional level, two (three if desired) foreign languages, students learn how to understand a foreign culture and cooperate with representatives of other ethnic groups and cultures, as well as acquire skills for business and personal communication.

Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetic
The Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics was organized in 1977. At present, the Faculty provides an education in the fields of "Applied Mathematics and Informatics", "Fundamental Informatics and Information Technologies", "Applied Mathematics" and "Business Informatics"
Active research is being conducted in the Faculty. The Faculty scholars' academic research is supported by grants from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia.
The Faculty maintains close ties with many universities in Russia and abroad: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vologda, Kazan, Dortmund (Germany), Amsterdam (Holland), Oxford (England), Los Angeles, Princeton (USA), Hobart (Australia), Warsaw (Poland), Nantes (France), Crema (Italy) and others.

Faculty of Psychology
TSU's Faculty of Psychology and Social Work opened in 1993. Despite the increasing number of educational institutions which offer psychologist training, TSU's Faculty of Psychology and Social Work remains the only center of its kind in the Tver region that prepares specialists while preserving the traditions of a classical university. Currently, 7 doctors and 22 candidates of sciences work at the TSU's Faculty of Psychology and Social Work.
The Faculty's alumni receive a multidisciplinary education and are in demand by employers in areas requiring the ability of accomplishing complex and interesting practical problems. These employers include: the educational system, small and medium enterprises, healthcare institutions, the management system of the execution of punishments, social security governing bodies, psycho-social rehabilitation centers, employment services offices etc.

Institute of Economics and Management
The Faculty of Economics has been educating students since 1971, as part of the Faculty of Economics and Law. In 1972, the department was divided in two: the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Law. Since that time, the Faculty of Economic has existed as an independent department within Tver State University.

The Faculty comprises 6 departments: Economic Theory, (formerly Political Economy, founded in 1929, merged with the Faculty in 1995), Mathematics, Statistics and Informatics in Economics (formerly Automatic Processing of Economic Information and Statistics, created in 1981), Accounting (autonomous department as of 1983), Economics and Production Management (autonomous as of 1989), Finance (created in 1996), National Economy (created in 2000).

Currently, the faculty has 9 professors and 42 candidates of science, which amounts to more than 70 percent of staff holding a degree. This faculty houses the departments of: Economic Theory, Economics and Production Management, Finance, and the Department of National Economics that allow students to obtain postgraduate degree.

Faculty of Physical Education
The Faculty of Physical Education is one of Tver State University's oldest faculties. This department dates back to the Kalinin Pedagogical Institute, which provided education to more than 700 physical education students.
In connection with the reorganization of the Kalinin State Pedagogical Institute into a university in 1971, the Faculty of Physical Education was removed, and only reopened in1990, as part of TSU.
Today, the Faculty has taken its rightful place as an independent department within TSU. At present, the faculty has trained more than 500 physical education graduates.
Graduates of this faculty are well regarded, not only in Tver, but also beyond, with some becoming members of Russia's national teams and Tver region's teams in different sports. Our alumni make up the main core of physical education teachers, sports trainers and teachers that work in Tver's physical education departments.

Physico-Technical Faculty
Tver State University's Physics and Technical Faculty is the leading center for the study of physics in the Tver Region. It is also the main provider of highly qualified personnel in the field of physics for scientific organizations and educational institutions of all levels.
Key dates in the development of study of physics in the Tver region are: the opening of the Tver Teachers Institute in 1917, which included a physics and technical faculty; the creation of the Tver Pedagogical Institute in 1921 that comprised a physics and mathematical division; the opening of the Physics and Technical Faculty in 1932 and its further reorganization into the Physics and Mathematical Faculty (1942) and the Physics Faculty (1967). In 1999, already a part of Tver State University, the Physics Faculty was reorganized into the Physics and Technical Faculty.
At present, the Faculty is conducting research in solid-state physics, theoretical and molecular physics, as well as in the field of material physics.

Faculty of Philology
The Faculty of Philology is the only center for training qualified specialists in philology in the Tver Region. Its academic and pedagogical traditions date back to Tver's Female Teachers' Training School of P.P. Maximovich, the Tver Teachers Institute and the Tver Pedagogical Institute. Today, the Faculty is an important division of TSU and provides a fundamental humanitarian education based on Russian philology.
The Specialists educated in this Faculty are in demand in schools, colleges, vocational schools, mass media, libraries, museums, archives, state and municipal institutions, private companies, (publicity agencies, book publishing industry, book trade) etc.
The faculty's academic teaching staff meets the modern requirements for training the University students. There are 23 doctors and 52 candidates of philological sciences in the faculty.
The Faculty works in close contact with the Russian Language Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), the Russian Literature Institute of the RAS, (the Pushkin House), A.M. Gorky Institute of World Literature of the RAS, the Institute of Linguistics and the Institute for Linguistic Studies of the RAS, the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University, the St. Petersburg State Humanitarian University, and with the related departments of universities within Russia and abroad (Belarus, Bulgaria, Poland, France, Germany, Finland and Italy).

Faculty of Chemistry and Technology
TSU's Faculty of Chemistry and Technology opened in May 2002, after the division of the Faculty of Chemistry, which incorporated the departments of Chemistry, Biology and Geography. The teaching stuff, postgraduate, and undergraduate students are all involved in academic research, one of the most important elements of this department.

The main educational program is aimed at training specialists in the field of inorganic, analytical, organic and physical chemistry. Students consistently study general humanitarian, socio-economic, mathematical and general natural sciences, as well as general, professional and social disciplines.

The Faculty of Chemistry and Technology has highly qualified teaching staff for both teaching and conducting academic research. The teaching staff comprises 7 doctors of science, professors, 18 candidates of science, docents, 1 candidate of science & senior instructor, 2 senior lecturers and 2 associate lecturers. In addition, 10 candidates of science work in the research sector of the Physical Chemistry Department.

Faculty of Law
TSU's Faculty of Law opened in 1971. The first applicants to the specialty "Legal Studies" were admitted to the Faculty of History. However, in October 1971 the Faculty of Economics and Law opened and, in 1972, was reorganized into two faculties: The Law Faculty and the Economics Faculty. Since that time, the Faculty of Law has existed as an autonomous unit within Tver State University.
The Faculty of Law is proud of its alumni. Among them are highly qualified judges, investigators, prosecutors, public notaries, well-known attorneys, creative legislators, prominent businessmen and respected scholars.
It is worth noting that 99 percent of all judges in the Tver region are graduates from TSU's Law Faculty. This includes the majority of chairpersons of the district's courts, around 80 percent of members of the Tver region's Court and nearly one-third of Tver region's Arbitration Court. 80 percent of our graduates make up the workforce of the Tver region Prosecutor's Office and The Prosecutor's Offices in nearby districts.

The University Campus consists of 8 modern dormitories located mostly close to the buildings of the students' study. There are comfortable and well-equipped rooms and kitchens.

Accommodation in Tver is relatively cheap in comparison to Moscow, Saint-Petersburg and other big cities.

Where is the Tver State University located?
Tver city is attractive because of its location, It is situated between two capitals of Russia, Moscow and St. Petersburg, about 150 km from Moscow and 485 km from St. Petersburg. Tver is the nearest regional city from Moscow, that takes only 1 hour and 35 minutes by local train.
While not as big as the capital cities in Russia, Tver has plenty to offer. Today its population is about 420000. As it is a university city, it has a young population and you should find a selection of different activities such as sports, theatre, cinema, music and night life to keep students occupied.
